Are restless nights and lack of sleep leaving you feeling exhausted? Discover how aromatherapy can be the key to improving your sleep naturally.
During your menopause, a lack of sleep can be frustrating, especially when it affects your overall well-being and daily life for you and the people around you! Poor sleep can cause a lack of energy during the day, and this can affect our work life, leading us to feel less confident, tired and confused as to whether our brain fog is hormonal or a lack of sleep. These thoughts, on top of other possible menopause symptoms you may be having, and a busy day to day life, can lead to sleepless nights and feeling overwhelmed.
Aromatherapy can offer a natural and effective approach to improving sleep and overall relaxation.
There are many ways to use Aromatherapy and here are some solutions you can try to get the restful night’s sleep you deserve.
Good sleep hygiene is currently the topical phrase we are hearing, and incorporating that into your evening routine will help promote a better night’s sleep. Try using an essential oil diffuser with Lavender or Chamomile to help relax the nervous system and improve the quality of sleep. Start using the oils in your home and bedroom a few hours prior to bedtime to help you wind down. If that isn’t practical for you, an aromatherapy spray with the calming essential oils can be spritzed in your bedroom or onto your pillow to promote a restful night. A tip here is to be patient, some people benefit very quickly from these methods but do persevere as it can take others some time to feel the benefits.
Essential oils can help regulate sleep patterns by addressing factors that disrupt sleep, such as anxiety and restlessness
Using Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang to reduce stress and anxiety help calm the mind and promote a sense of tranquillity, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Aromatherapy not only helps you nod off but also supports deeper and more restorative sleep. Applying the essential oils to your body is another way of using Aromatherapy and diluting the oils with a carrier (base) oil and applying directly to your skin will enable you to enjoy the benefits throughout the night. Some base oils to try can include Grapeseed, Coconut or Jojoba oils but there are many to choose from ranging in price – do check for allergies before using any oils. Lavender is also very beneficial for muscular aches so using this oil and massaging it into your aching muscles will improve tension and your sleep! Other beneficial oils to try are Bergamot essential oil which has mood-lifting properties that can reduce feelings of tension and anxiety, leading to improved sleep quality. Marjoram is another and can help promote deeper, more restful sleep and is warming mentally and emotionally.

Quality sleep is essential for overall health and wellbeing especially during menopausal hormonal changes
Quality sleep is essential for overall health and wellbeing especially during menopausal hormonal changes and can help to improve other symptoms. If you have a bath at home, adding a few drops of essential oil to your bathwater for a relaxing pre-sleep ritual is hugely beneficial, as our bodies are more relaxed in water and this allows the essential oils chosen to enter our body more easily. Ideally relax in the warm bathwater for 15-20 minutes which might sound decadent, but it is a pre bedtime routine you are initiating into your life and some regular time to yourself decompressing after a busy day is vital. This routine doesn’t need to be every night if it seems a little overwhelming but remember, you now have other methods of using Aromatherapy to help sleep too so use a combination if it makes your life easier.
